Britain and America have established a landmark bilateral deal that will keep no import taxes on UK drug exports going into the US market.

The Terms of the Pact

In exchange for the tariff guarantee, the UK has committed to boost funding on drugs through the National Health Service (NHS). This move guarantees that tariffs on these key goods will remain at zero for a duration of three years.

This agreement comes after previous statements to hike duties on branded pharmaceutical imports, with figures floated up to one hundred percent.

"This deal with the UK strengthens the global environment for cutting-edge drugs and introduces long-overdue equity to American-British medicine commerce," a statement said.

Trade Impact

Drugs are one of the the United Kingdom's most significant goods shipped to the America, which is by far the largest buyer for leading British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data reveal that in the one-year period to the end of last September, the UK exported medicines valued at over eleven billion pounds to the US. This value represented nearly one-fifth of total UK exports in that timeframe.

"This deal protects work, stimulates capital expenditure and facilitates the UK to become a global hub for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary remarked.

Specific British Pledges

The pact involves several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will increase the price threshold at which it considers new medicines to be unaffordable by a quarter.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a target to double overall public funding on drugs from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The amount manufacturers must pay back to the NHS to stay within budget will be limited at fifteen percent. Previously, rebates topped 20%.

Recent Tensions

The deal follows a protracted tension between the drug companies and the British authorities over drug pricing and approval rates.

This friction were heightened by arguments that American patients were paying significantly more for the same drugs than patients in the other developed nations.

In recent months, several large manufacturing plans in the UK have been halted or cancelled, while multi-billion-dollar funding commitments have been pledged toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS had to increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had decreased as a share of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
