Approximately fifty automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests indicate the liquid was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are not yet aware of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.
City officials said they were working "to resolve the case" and have asked to the public for information.
A high-ranking official commented the incident left him stunned and required to be solved quickly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
