Entire Career of Earnings Not Enough for UK Labor Force to Enter Richest 10%, Report Says

Based on fresh study, the typical employee in the UK would have to work 52 years' worth of income to reach the net worth of the most affluent 10% of the population.

Widening Wealth Gap Across Decades

The study analyzed financial assets statistics from the recent health crisis years and found that during the mid-2000s, it would have taken nearly four decades of average worker salary to reach the top 10th of the financial hierarchy.

A research lead involved with the study commented: "Economic disparities in Britain are presently so substantial that a average worker accumulating their complete salary during their working years would remain unable to achieve the peak of the financial hierarchy."

Assessing the Financial Disparity

The research found that the disparity between the net worth of the median citizen and a person belonging to the wealthiest decile was £1 million in 2006-08, but had widened to £1.3 million in real terms by recent times.

The economist continued: "These disparities are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is low – individuals who begin life affluent tend to remain affluent, and the opposite holds true."

Comparative Financial Divide

Although the wealth gap widening in actual numbers, the share of overall assets in the UK owned by the richest households – known as "relative wealth inequality" – has been "broadly stable since the 1980s era," according to the study.

During this period, overall assets in the UK rose substantially from thrice the gross domestic product, to approximately 7.5x.

Factors of Financial Divide

Referred to as "automatic" gains, by means of growing real estate costs and adjustments to pension valuations, were the key contributors of the widening wealth gap from 2010 onward, as stated in the analysis.

These gains generally flowed to older, property-owning households, the analysis reveals – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Generational Economic Gaps

The typical financial disparity between individuals aged 30-34 and sixty-somethings more than doubled in actual value, from £135k in the mid-2000s, to £310k.

Regional Variations

Furthermore, the study revealed pronounced regional variations, with the average level of assets in the pandemic period standing at £290,000 in the southeastern region, where housing costs have tended to rise rapidly, compared with 110 thousand pounds in the north-east.

COVID Era Impact

Throughout the COVID period, when numerous employees were covered under the taxpayer-backed furlough scheme, and health crisis restrictions curtailed consumption options, the statistics indicate many households were in a position to set aside money, increasing their wealth.

More affluent homes performed significantly better, nevertheless. "The typical family in the poorest fifth saw their available funds increase by just £80 throughout the health crisis (from 2019 to 2022), roughly identical to the two years pre-pandemic. Conversely, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves increase by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
