Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Team Versus India

The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-match ODI series against India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a unexpected selection.

Recent Form Result in Omission

Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international side following managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a best innings of 47 in his most recent ten ODI batting appearances.

The 31-year-old has featured in 68 one-day internationals and scored 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a return to the Test side ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.

Surprise Inclusion and Team Changes

There have been indications of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.

The left-hander may to make his ODI debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.

The left-hander has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a red-ball recall as Australia search for a fix to their opening batting issues.

Pace Additions and Injury News

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc is back for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the 3-0 Test series sweep of West Indies in July.

Big Bash star Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the lead up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.

ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.

Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures

Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.

Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 teams after hitting a ton in the last match against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare specific players for the Test matches ahead.”

Australia’s three-game ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
