Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration last week due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
