Senate Greenlights Legislation to Release Jeffrey Epstein Records

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday quickly approved to a measure that will require the publication of investigative files associated with the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the House of Representatives and a reversal by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. The White House changed course after months of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, speeding up the process. Just before, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have waited long enough. The survivors have waited long enough,” Chuck Schumer said in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Let the truth come out. Allow openness to prevail.”

Presidential Signature

This legislation next will be sent to Donald Trump for his endorsement. Trump signaled on the previous day that he would sign the measure.

Even though the president has for an extended period downplayed the outcry over the official management of the investigation as a “Democrat hoax”, he expressed his backing for the House bill over the weekend, and stated he would approve it if it reaches his desk.

Support and Opposition

Opposition lawmakers, along with survivors of Epstein and their supporters who were watching from a viewing area, applauded after the bill was enacted. The sole “no” vote came from Clay Higgins, who expressed concern he worried the measure would disclose personal information of people, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
