Trump Government to Issue Half Food Stamp Benefits in November

The US administration stated it would grant reduced support to numerous SNAP users as the ongoing federal closure reached a historic period.

Benefit Reduction Details

Amid growing concern for the around 42 million Americans registered in the food assistance program, the Department of Agriculture confirmed it would utilize emergency money to continue payments, albeit at merely 50% of the standard amount households typically obtain.

Resources for the program officially expired on the weekend due to the budget standoff, now in its 34th day with no clear signal of resolution.

Legal Proceedings

The announcement came in a legal document after previous denials to issue urgent funding on purported legal grounds. A court had determined the government could not refuse program funds as a result of the shutdown.

Subsequent to the legal directive, the president announced it would be "honored" to provide emergency funding for the program.

Implementation Difficulties

Authorities noted that money could start flowing by midweek, but highlighted the need for further clarification from the courts on how to properly transfer funds for SNAP support.

  • Several states have indicated it will take days or even extended time to provide assistance to needy families.
  • Long queues have been documented at pantries across the nation.
  • In several regions, stadium parking lots were converted into help locations.

State Emergency Responses

Several authorities, like New York, Oregon, and Virginia, declared states of emergency to allocate short-term resources for assistance. However, these allocations were expected to be a small portion of the regular government funding.

The federal spending for SNAP amount to approximately $8 billion monthly across the United States.
