Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "woke" agendas represent an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
