Woman Knifed in Birmingham City Bus Stop Assault Succumbs to Injuries
A woman who was stabbed to her neck area during a random assault near a bus shelter in Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.
The deceased woman, aged 34 years, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside Bullring shopping complex, just prior to 9 PM GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court on Monday, charged over the violent incident.
He was previously accused of attempted murder however after the victim's passing the charge has been updated to murder.
Law Enforcement Actions
The force said officers would be in the downtown area on Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.
Investigators are requesting for witnesses who may have seen the accused, who is described as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing grey athletic wear, dark headwear, trainers with a backpack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred near the Bullring shopping centre, across from the main entrance to Birmingham New Street station.
Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as a random violent act and Det Insp James Nix said efforts continue to determine the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
Shalini Doal, who works nearby, described paramedic and police activity when she finished her shift around 10 PM Friday night.
She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances around 9 PM.
"A lot of my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our security is compromised essentially, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, said he came to Birmingham quite frequently visiting his partner who lives in the city, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he said.
"She doesn't drive and works at major concert locations... and to think a totally random act [happened], you know, it's terrible."
